More land in Clinton and Essex Counties will be protected from development by DEC easements.
NY state purchased of approximately 1,600 acres of conservation easement on lands in Clinton and Essex Counties according to the Department of Environmental Conservation. The state bought a little more than 1,400 acres of conservation easement in Clinton County, while about 200-acres in a conservation easement was purchased in Essex County. This adds to the more than 900,000 acres of conservation easement lands managed by DEC. Conservation easements are legal agreements made between private landowners and New York State. While the private entity retains ownership, the easement becomes its own property deed and is held by the State of New York in perpetuity, even if the land is sold to another private entity. The state and landowner agree on the terms of the easement, unique to each agreement, which typically includes permanent protection of lands from development.
