100 Foot Rule

Tuesday, December 16, 2025 at 5:53 AM

The Governor is being urged by both sides to sign legislation involving gas line hook ups in New York State.

Advocates on both sides of the 100-foot-rule are urging the governor to make a decision.  Those who what her to sign the legislation say it would reduce natural gas bills while those who oppose the legislation say eliminating the rule would significantly increase the cost of hooking up a gas line.  Currently the state law requires gas utilities to cover the first 100 feet of new gas line installation for customers.  State Senator Dan Stec said If enacted, homeowners would have to pay the full material and installation costs for connecting to natural gas service.  He said that the estimated costs could reach $14,000 per home.  Senator Stec joined Senate Republican colleagues in urging the governor to veto legislation eliminating the “100-foot rule.”
