Over half of Tyrannosaurus rex specimens are in private or commercial hands, recent research found. 14 of these privately-owned specimens are of young T. rexes, which "carries the highest scientific cost", Thomas Carr of the Carthage Institute of Paleontology said. In short, the more dino bones rest in private collections, the less data scientists have to learn about these ancient creatures. Currently, only 11% of commercially collected T. rex fossils are in public trusts, like museums. (newser)
