The recent dry conditions have kept forest rangers busy this summer fighting fires statewide.
Since August first, Rangers have responded to 53 fires statewide. The DEC reports that about half were caused by campfires that were not extinguished properly. While daily fire danger ratings may fluctuate based on weather, the overall risk is elevated beyond what is typical for this time of year. These conditions are expected to continue through September and may persist in October as well. With the fall foliage and dry autumn season beginning, fire risk will continue to be a concern in the North Country and beyond.
