Trudeau Institute Faces Setback as Congressional Funding is Cut

Thursday, March 20, 2025 at 7:59 AM

The Trudeau Institute in Saranac Lake will not receive the $4.5 million in federal funding it was approved for, which was intended for upgrades and recruitment. This decision came as Congress passed a bill to avoid a government shutdown, leaving critical funding out of the package. William Reiley, president of the institute, expressed concerns that without this funding, they cannot recruit new faculty to expand the research center. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) also issued a rule that would cap indirect costs on grants, further threatening research centers' financial stability. A federal judge has temporarily blocked this NIH order, but challenges remain for the institute’s long-term operations.
