Rolling Blackouts in NYS

Tuesday, September 2, 2025 at 4:04 AM

As the summer heat subsides so does the stress on the state's power grid that saw near peak demand.

At the start of summer Governor Hochul acknowledged that NY needs to produce more power to keep up with the increased demands electrification of the state will bring.  On June 23rd the Governor Directed the Power Authority to develop plans to build a Nuclear Power Plant and warned without more power the state may face rolling blackouts.  Ironically, on June 24th, a day after the governor said that, the NY Independent System Operation, a group that monitors the state’s power grid, issued an Energy Warning and reported that emergency operations may be initiated to maintain system reliability due to a decline in operating reserves.  Several more warnings like this followed throughout the summer.  Starting in January the State’s all-electric buildings law will require most new buildings to use only electric heat and appliances.  Some state lawmakers have said this increased demand likely will require the radical increase in power the governor spoke of or her prediction of rolling backouts will become reality.
