The rabid raccoon is the first animal to test positive for rabies in Essex County this year.
The Essex County Health Department said the Wadsworth Laboratory notified them of the positive rabies test results last week. In 2024 the county had six animals test positive for the virus; they included three raccoons, two skunks and a woodchuck according to the health department.
