More than 3,300 tickets were issued during the first-ever license plate checking enforcement campaign.
"Operation Plate Check" identified vehicles on NY State roads with fictitious license plates and fake "temporary tags." The police effort was a response to an increase in the use of fraudulent plates in the state. In addition, it also targeted operators who are deliberately covering, obstructing and defacing license plates to avoid traffic enforcement cameras, license plate readers and tolls. State Police Superintendent Steven James said, "the use of fraudulent and obstructed plates undermines public safety and we will continue to hold those trying to cheat the system accountable."
