Newborn screening by the state is the most comprehensive in the U.S. and has detected health problems.
The NY State Department of Health recently offered statistics showing the critical role newborn screening plays in detecting serious but treatable conditions in infants. Each year, more than 200,000 babies born in NY are screened shortly after birth for over 50 rare but serious conditions. The health department reports that last year 671 infants were diagnosed with a condition on the list. Since launching in 1965, the Newborn Screening Program has tested more than 10 million infants. The state’s screening is among the most comprehensive in the nation.
