The State again received more tax dollars from Washington than sent.
For the fourth year in a row New York has had a positive balance of payments after a long history of sending more tax dollars to D.C. than it received back. According to the State Comptroller's office, the reason for the improved federal funding has to do with pandemic relief. However, State Comptroller, Thomas DiNapoli, said "with the end of pandemic aid, this may be the last year New Yorkers see a positive return from Washington." Prior to the pandemic, NY consistently ranked among the states with the largest negative balance of payments.
