A workforce reduction ordered in 2024 resulted in a significant increase in overtime for the Corrections department.
The Department of Correctios had among the highest number of overtime hours worked according to a report issued by State Comptroller’s office. The report showed that in 2024 the average annual overtime hours per Corrections employee grew 26.3% from 2023, with the increase coinciding with a workforce reduction of more than 1,000 in that year according to the Comptroller. Overall, New York State agency overtime costs increased 10.2% last year for a total of $1.3 billion, reflecting an increase in the number of overtime hours worked by almost two million according to the annual report by State Comptroller’s office.
