DMV Points Change

Friday, February 6, 2026 at 5:50 AM

Changes are coming to the DMV points system that could lead to more license revocations for violators.

Area drivers will soon face some new points violations and increased points on existing violations according to the DMV.  Starting February 16th, any alcohol or drug related conviction will be an 11-point violation currently no points are assessed.  Drivers speeding in a construction zone will no longer get points based on speed, they will automatically get an 8-point violation.  In addition, the time frame in which DMV can take administrative action against a persistent violator is going from an 18-month look back to a 24-month look back.  Once 24 months have passed from the violation date, the points for that violation no longer count toward your total. However, the points remain on your driving record if the conviction remains on your record and may be used by your insurance company to increase premiums.
