The NY Division of Consumer Protection warns people to use caution when buying supplements.
Unlike over the counter or prescription medications, dietary supplements may be sold without any pre-market review by the FDA leaving the product susceptible to unsubstantiated claims according to the state Consumer Protection Division. The FDA estimates there around 100,000 different products available to consumers in 2024. That's up from just 4,000 products in 1994. The federal government says about 75% of Americans take supplements.
