The senior population in NY is growing and a new report concludes better spending oversight is needed.
A new report indicates that it’s difficult to determine if taxpayer dollars are reaching older adults who need help. The report, from the Comptroller’s office, finds that even as state funding for senior services has increased, thousands remain on waitlists for in-home care, meals and other essential support. The report shows that lack of adequate data reporting by the Office for Aging makes it difficult to know who is being left behind. Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli indicated that the information was also needed to determine how effectively taxpayer dollars are being used. DiNapoli’s report recommends improving the consistency of service and funding data, as well as publicly reporting county level waitlists.
