The origin of April Fool's Day is not clear.
One theory regarding the start of April Fool's Day is that it began when France shifted from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar in 1582. Reportedly, that change moved the start of the new year from April to January. Those unaware of the change were mocked for continuing to celebrate on April first and may have been called "fools".
