As the federal government pares down AmeriCorps, about 40 programs statewide will be affected.
AmeriCorps, created by President Clinton in the 90's, was originally intended to offer college students a way to serve their community while making some money to pay back student loans. The program grew well beyond the original goal and is now being cut back by the federal government. NY will lose close to $30 million in grant money as a result. The AmeriCorps program in New York State provides service offerings for which members receive stipends according to the State Commission on National and Community Service.
