Advocates for a New York State's end of life bill want Governor Hochul to approve it without further delay.
NY advocates want Gov. Kathy Hochul to approve the state’s medical aid in dying bill. It allows terminally ill people with six months to live to use this option but it includes many safeguards, such as needing two physicians to approve such requests. The state legislature passed the bill after a decade of debate and failing to make it out of committee. Corinne Carey, New York and New Jersey campaign director for Compassion & Choices, said people with terminal illness are eager to see medical aid in dying become law in New York. "They see the Governor addressing all kinds of priorities on the news every night, and they don’t understand why she doesn’t see the urgency," Carey emphasized. "The reaction from them is fear, anger, impatience." There are hundreds of bills the legislature passed before the Governor, who has until year's end to make a decision.
