Study: Social Media Creates Delusional Environment

Sunday, March 16, 2025 at 8:00 PM

A study from Simon Fraser University found that social media can be a breeding ground for delusional thinking. Delusional thinking is linked to narcissism, body dysmorphia, anorexia, and erotomania (the belief a celebrity is in love with you). When creating a post, you might imagine what audience members are thinking, a mental skill heightened in those with certain disorders. "Social media is creating conditions where delusions can more easily be generated and sustained...plus the absence of effective reality-checking," Professor Bernard Crespi said. This research could help platforms consider ways to minimize psychological harm. (Study Finds)
